Re: Coronavirus: COVID-19
There may be an element of this in some cases, but we should also remember that they are also victims of an insidious campaign of misinformation, disinformation and outright lies. We can argue over the motivations for that campaign and who is responsible (it's unlikely to be just one person, group ...

Re: Coronavirus: COVID-19
I'm not quite sure how the UK's new policy, namely lifting pretty much all restrictions while we have high rates of infection, fits in with this eminently sensible advice. They've not made it entirely explicit, but the reasoning seems to be something along the lines of letting the infections run ri...

this is freaking cool... so simple, why didn't they do this sooner? can't tell you how many times this would have come in handy... https://i.imgur.com/1WzpBWL.png Isn't that just Windows Terminal? It's been available for Windows 10 since 2019. And don't get me wrong, it's solid and leagues better t...

Re: W11 HOPEFULL OR ?
OK, all very interesting, but it's not really helping, at least not me. :) I have looked in the BIOS and can see nothing obvious, don't know where to look really, any suggestions? The CPU is an intel i9-9900K, so not exactly that old, but still discontinued. The motherboard is an Asus...

Re: Random News not worthy of own thread
I work with corporate networks. I'm not going to try and offer statistics for all servers because as you say it's hard, but Windows Server is still incredibly common, and Azure managed services (Office 365, Azure Active Directory, etc etc) are very popular and all Windows backed.

TPM is a two sided thing. It is a blackbox, holey, a potential privacy catastrophy, and a potential backdoor for remote control of what saftware can be run on a private computer. https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/can-you-trust.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_Platform_Module The only thing t...

Re: Random News not worthy of own thread
WSL2 is a stripped kernel implementation, it is not a VM, it uses a downsized VM as a shim for performance reasons. And I am nitpicking and in smart ass mode :-) There's a Microsot document describing the principle, whose link I've lost. But you don't need it the WSL when you can have the real thin...

Re: W11 HOPEFULL OR ?
Also there could well be some compatibility issues, as in, some PCs will not be able to use it. Evidently you will need a TPM chip, version 2.0 to instal it at all. My 9 month old PC, even though of a good spec does not have one at all, nor even the header to pop one in. It does however have a plac...

Re: Random News not worthy of own thread
Just saying, even the WSL 2 with Microsoft's own Linux Kernel doesn't have Linux performance and I am not sure if the WSL kernel has full Linux functionality, like choice of graphics protocols and filesystems and so. A VM would, but then a proper installation without anything in the way is even bet...

Re: Random News not worthy of own thread
My big problem with Johnson in this context is that he just can't help rubbing people's faces in how insincere he's being. Case in point: climate change is a major topic on the agenda for these meetings. Naturally, he chose to fly by private jet from London to Cornwall for the meeting, and then pose...

Those figures are for all confirmed delta variant cases. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/03/india-covid-variant-may-increase-risk-of-hospital-admission-early-data-suggests Note that not all cases are sequenced so that's not the actual total number of delta cases, it's just to give a pictu...

May I ask what happened to the other 12 people of these 126? However 3 out of >100 people seems reasonably safe. And falls right into the numbers of the studies proclaiming an effectiveness of >95%. Don't know. Possibly not known, possibly edge cases like "received vaccine yesterday", possibly an e...

Re: Coronavirus: COVID-19
These studies are too small to measure efficacy, much less compare it against other vaccination strategies; they're mostly about ensuring that it's safe and the immune response generated looks as expected. Which it is and it does, which is good, as quite a few people are getting mixed vaccinations f...

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01359-3 Yes, it works, and potentially better than two doses of the same vaccine. The aim is to get your immune system to respond to Covid, so there are some fairly obvious advantages to a mixed vaccine dose - less chance of generating an immune response to...

I cannot, nor will argue with the figures you offer, ( other than to say there will not be decades to sort this, ) but will ask why has there not been a significant improvement in public transport? It's coming and only patience is required? Never mind that the system will create divisions, b...

Have you got a source, that is not from a government site? I just struggle to trust them in cases like this. No. Energy use falling is consistent with other similar nations, and it's trivial to verify that a lot of fossil fuel power stations have been shut down and renewable generation capacity has...

There is a cookie warning filter list for AdBlock and the like. If you're using AdBlock Plus, there's a "block cookie warnings" option in the settings that turns it on. For other plugins, the filter list is https://www.i-dont-care-about-cookies.eu/abp/ In my experience it's a bit hit and miss, but b...

Re: Cost of living and minimum wage.
I agree completely that there's a lot of policies which have propped up the growth of the housing market and compounded the problem. Enabling of buy-to-let mortgages and holding empty properties in expensive areas as an investment are both major problems. I also agree that incentivising building is ...
