[6.00 Beta 7 build 496124] Excessive reflections in certain sectors - Settings required explained.

Post by Tycow » Mon, 27. Mar 23, 13:24

Hi all,

I'm having real trouble in certain sectors with cockpit glass reflections; in some instances they are taking over the entire screen.

I have set the Cockpit Glass Reflections setting to 0, only to still end up with the issue in the attached screenshot. Updating my graphics drivers, and rebooting the game & computer have not alleviated the issue.

Any ideas?

Screenshot of the issue and my settings screen, along with a DxDiag, are attached below.

.. But why is the sky box / planets internally reflected ?
Because there are limitations on how well we can fake reflections.
As long as we are using tricks to create reflections, edge cases like this will always appear.
This will only be solved with implementing pathtraced reflections - and we are probably years away from doing so.

Apologies, I forgot to mention the sector. You are correct that it is MoP IX.

Thanks for linking the thread; I had a read of it before submitting this report, and I understand their are limitations in how reflections are created/drawn/whatever. What I'm not sure on is whether turning a setting called "Cockpit Glass Reflections" to zero should disable them entirely?

Basically, is the setting working as intended (i.e. even at zero, there is still an amount of reflection present), or is the setting itself bugged?

The setting is working as intended, but the effect you are seeing is not controlled by this setting unfortunately.

Ooh wait hold the phone .. I dont think Cockpit reflections are working at all, I think 6.0 Beta 7 has maybe messed this up a bit.

My worst case scenario is a Moreya (Geometric Owl), in my topic the Cockpit pilot consoles were a bit bright, which Linolafett toned down a bit, and also introduced the new setting and all was good in 6.0 Beta 6 ..

.. Now though in 6.0 Beta 7, with the Cockpit Reflections on 100%, I cant see any of the usual toned down Console reflections that we did in Beta 6.

Just this horrible skybox

@Devs (and in particular Linolafett who is familiar with the issue) I will post a video link shortly ..

Ok first just a reminder for @Devs :

This is what I used to see in the Geometric Owl, you guys toned it down a bit which was great and a bit more subtle, and also provided the Cockpit Reflections setting which was working in Beta 6.

Now in Beta 7, the cockpit reflections are not showing up at all even with the Cockpit reflections setting at 100%

I start the video in Memory of Profit IX, tilted up a bit so that normally in the blackness of space we would see the illuminated pilot consols reflected in the Cockpit glass .. They aren't reflected at all with the Cockpit reflections setting at 100%

Then I try the setting and also try just moving the ship around a bit so you can see how imposing the Skybox planet surface being reflected is currently. It obscures more than the old console reflections used to.

You have set your envmap probe quality to "low".
Set it to "medium" or "high" to get the reflection inside the cockpit.
You will see then the holo elements reflected when walking around in the moreya.
The relfections are really subtle, when sitting, as people complained about the red stuff blocking the view in dark sectors.

That the slider for the reflection intensity is not working is a bug - at least appears to me like one.
I forwarded it to the right person.

EDIT: The opacity slider is currently only working when the envmap probes are set to "medium" or "high".

I just set Reflection Probe setting to Medium and you are right they are back again ..
X4 27_03_2023 20_45_15.png
So if we want Cockpit Reflections, no setting Low on Reflection Probes .. Got it.
